An eventful journey for Science Express

The fascinating Indo-German science-on-wheels exhibition, “Science Express”, which chugged into Delhi earlier this week was formally closed by Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday.

A cooperative venture between Germany’s Max Planck Society and India’s Department of Science and Technology, the train has travelled more than 15,000 km in 217 days and hosted a large number of science enthusiasts across several States.

The unique venture has helped the Indian Government in reaching out to people in smaller cities and far-flung areas and introduced them to the latest in science and technology. According to Max Planck Society president Peter Gruss, “The Science Express is a massive success that has crossed our expectations. With its help we have managed to prepare a worldwide communication platform for education and research in Germany.”

The custom-designed train had illustrated and interactive exhibits, video clips and large format images in its exhibition coaches. Each of the coaches was based on a scientific theme such as “The Big Bang”, “The Architecture of the Brain” and “The World of Chemistry”. A major highlight of the train was the miniature interactive chemistry laboratory with four work stations where students were briefed on experiments, their practical application, and then given an opportunity to conduct their own experiments.

The exhibition also provided counselling sessions mediated through the Triumphant Institute of Management Education that was chosen by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The 14-coach train was flagged off by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from the Capital last October.
