ECO AWARENESS: A boy dribbles a ball symbolising the globe at Henkel India’s World Environment Day initiative in Chennai on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: “Don’t use petrol vehicles, use bullock carts…” was one of the suggestions to make the globe a cleaner and greener place.

It was part of the over 1,000 suggestions, comments, thoughts and concerns for the environment that poured in on Wednesday at Spencer Plaza as management trainees of Henkel India canvassed to ‘align society to environment and sustainability concerns.’

The event, “Henkel Enviro-care” which was organised as part of World Environment Day celebrations, had something for everyone.

S. Ramanuj, a class IV student of Delhi Public School on vacation in the city, coloured a portion of a tree that signified the need for more greening of the globe.

There were other comments too like “June 5 comes and reminds us to keep our environment clean. Let’s make our earth last longer and beautiful,” “don’t use plastic covers,” “use car pooling” and “old vehicles should be removed.”

Vishal Mundhra, one of the management trainees, said that the response from the public was amazing. “People are very much aware of environmental issues,” he said. Sayan from Kolkata, who was explaining how the Henkel Green Index that let citizens and visitors rate Chennai for its greenery and pollution levels on a scale of 1 to 5 said, Chennai was greener and cleaner than metro cities like Kolkata and Delhi. Most of those who placed their thumb impression on the chart chose either 1 or 2 implying the city was polluted and was losing its greenery.
