Work out: Students of AUP School, Irumbuchola, coming to school with saplings and agricultural implements as part of World Environment Day on Thursday. MALAPPURAM: The students of a primary school in Malappuram district donned the mantle of farmers, observing the World Environment Day on Thursday. They stole the hearts of not only their parents and teachers but also the neighbouring local bodies by planting 50 plantain saplings and a variety of vegetables on 50 cents of unused land belonging to A.U.P. School, Irumbuchola. The school campus looked like a farmland with the students avidly working on the land under the guidance of experts. The activities began at 7 a.m. with a tractor ploughing the land, followed by a large group of students arriving in a procession with plantain saplings, spades, pick-axes and other tools. When the upper primary students concentrated on plantains, their juniors were busy planting vegetables like elephant foot yam and snake gourd. Besides agricultural experts, there were teachers and parents to assist them. The school’s Harita Eco Club organised the programme in response to the recommendations in the new curriculum to promote agriculture as part of our culture.
