Antony to head seven-member panel to revitalise Congress

Special Correspondent

Group to submit recommendations to Sonia within 15 days

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister A.K. Antony will head the panel proposed by the CWC at its meeting here last Saturday to suggest measures to revitalise the party ahead of the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Others in the seven-member panel are: the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh; Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, party general secretary Mukul Wasnik, and Urmila Singh, a veteran tribal leader from Madhya Pradesh.

The group has been asked to submit its recommendations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi within 15 days. The decision to call for a detailed road map to energise the party machinery ahead of the next elections was taken at the CWC meeting convened in the shadow of the defeat of the party in the Karnataka Assembly elections.

While taking stock of the party’s preparedness for the upcoming elections, the CWC noted that the Congress could re-energise itself to meet emerging challenges. Meanwhile, another report on ‘intra-party reforms’ has also been finalised and would be submitted to Ms. Gandhi soon by the panel on ‘Future Challenges and Opportunities’.
