Fake friendship club busted

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of six persons, including five women, the Crime Branch of the Delhi police claim to have busted a fake friendship club.

Nearly a thousand people have allegedly been duped by the club by promising them contact numbers of women seeking friendship.

The transaction statements of the club’s four bank accounts showed deposits of over Rs.40 lakh since January this year. The police team, which was tipped off about the club running surreptitiously from Karol Bagh, arrested mastermind Sushil Kumar and four women during a raid on Tuesday.

Another woman was later arrested at their instance.

Seven mobile phones, four notebooks, seven debit cards and a fake driving licence have been seized, the police said. Sushil Kumar, who was earlier involved in over half-a-dozen criminal cases, would place advertisements in leading Hindi dailies promising women friends and massage opportunities, the police said. “When interested people called up the given numbers, they were asked to deposit Rs.4,000 in a bank account before providing them the contact number of ‘affluent’ women seeking friendship. After the money was deposited, the clients were provided a cell phone number which was answered by a woman employee of the club,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Shukla. When the clients expressed a desire to meet the women, they were asked to deposit another Rs.25,000 in the bank account and seek a code number from the club. After the money was deposited, the club would stop responding to the phone calls. The women employees were paid Rs.4,000 per month.
