Local calls attract roaming charges
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Local calls are attracting roaming charges for a section of BSNL mobile users in Chengalpattu areas bordering Andhra Pradesh.
These CellOne users, who should be enjoying local call tariffs for any call within Tamil Nadu, are getting billed on the roaming slab, thanks to the direction of the antenna on one of the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) on the Andhra side.
The problem has been sourced to the Andhra tower feeding signals to these mobile connections, leading to anomaly in tariffs.
The affected users are in places such as Obasamudram, Chunnambukulam, Tiruttani, Pallipetti and Athipatti that are now under the domain of the expanded Chennai Circle of BSNL that extends to Chengalpattu.
When contacted, Chennai Telephones chief general manager said the issue had been raised with his counterpart in Andhra Pradesh and a request made to change the orientation of the antenna.
Signal strengthened
BSNL Chennai Telephones has also strengthened the booster signal of its newly-erected BTS at Athipatti that provides coverage for the Chengalpattu areas bordering Andhra Pradesh.
