MECA opposes move for economic norms

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Muslim Employees Cultural Association (MECA) has described any move to introduce economic norms for reservation as against the Constitution.

In a memorandum submitted to the National Commission for Economically Backward Classes on Thursday it cited the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Indira Sahni case in support of its contention. It pointed out that reservation was not meant for economic betterment but for giving a share in power to sections which were marginalised. Many other things could be done for economic betterment and they included assignment of land, making available bank loans, providing scholarship for education, free hostel facility and fee concession.
