dated June 6, 1958: Situation in Ceylon

The closed session of Ceylon’s House of Representatives on June 4 lent general support to Mr. Bandaranaike’s Government for the steps it took, including the declaration of a state of emergency to quell Tamil-Sinhalese riots that had flared up in various parts of the island. There was a demand for an early conference of all political parties to restore racial harmony and to preserve the country against threats of political division that would inevitably arise from a situation of communal distrust.
