dated June 6, 1958: East Pakistan’s economy

Mr. Ataur Rahman Khan, East Pakistan Chief Minister, mounted a scathing attack on the Pakistan Government for what he described as “its apathy” towards the Eastern wing and the “step-motherly” treatment meted out to the province, at a press conference in Karachi on June 4. He said that the Centre’s “apathy” was the chief reason for the present “extremely desperate” economic situation in the Eastern wing. Mr. Rahman is in Karachi for talks with the Central authorities on increased relief and developmental grants for East Pakistan.
