Khakis out in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla: Police personnel in Himachal Pradesh will no longer have the khaki uniform. The State Government has approved a “smarter” blue dress. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has given the nod for the change, according to Director General of Police Ashwani Kumar.

Mr. Kumar said initially the uniform of blue trousers, light blue shirt, blue cap and blue berets would be worn by some 14,000 personnel from the ranks of constable to inspector, including Station House Officer. Their shoes and belts will remain black. The change has been ordered with immediate effect.

In the case of Indian Police Service and Himachal Police Services officers, a recommendation for a similar change has been sent to the Central Government, in order that the rules may be amended.

A police spokesman said the objectives were to shed the image associated with the British-era khaki uniform introduced in 1861. He said eventually the entire police force would wear the same uniform. Women personnel will give up the salwar-kameez in favour of trousers and shirts. — PTI
