Six schoolchildren injured in accident

CHENNAI: Six schoolchildren were injured on Thursday when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling was hit by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus on Santhome High Road.

The front portion of the autorickshaw bore the brunt of the collision. The autorickshaw driver was seriously injured. The driver of the bus (M27D from SIDCO Nagar to Pattinapakkam) has been arrested, and the bus seized by Sastri Nagar traffic police.

The children, aged between 8 and 12, studying in Montfort Matriculation Academy, were returning home when the accident took place. The injured Vijay, Jai Dhanush, Vidya, Pramod, Gayathri and Idayavan are residents of Nadukuppam on Lloyds Road.

Subiksha (4), her brother Monish (6) and two other children who travelled in the same autorickshaw were thrown off the vehicle. “Subhiksha was standing on the pavement and a neighbour brought her home,” said her mother Revathi. Monish, who sustained bruises, was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital.

Vijay, a class VI student who suffered fracture on his right leg and was admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital, was later shifted to a private hospital.

Idhayavan, was shifted to the Government General Hospital as he had lost a few teeth and needed treatment for the same.

Autorickshaw driver K. Arumugam (46), who was injured in the head and leg, was shifted from the GRH to the Government General Hospital.
