BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged scientists hailing from Orissa to apply their knowledge and vision for the development of the State and ensure benefits of research reached the common man. Addressing the annual awards presentation ceremony of the Orissa Bigyan Academy here on Wednesday, Mr. Patnaik pointed out that the academy was set up by the government to popularise science and recognise the achievements of scientists. FelicitatedThe Chief Minister felicitated two senior scientists – Siba Prasad Mishra and Madhab Chandra Dash – for their lifetime contribution to the growth of scientific research. He also conferred the coveted Samanta Chandra Sekhar Samman for 2006 on four scientists for their pioneering achievements in their respective fields. They were: Bijay Kumar Mishra (chemistry), Pramod Kumar Sahoo (life sciences), Balaram Panigrahi (engineering and technology) and Karunakar Nanda (physical sciences). Each award carries a cash prize of Rs.15, 000 besides a citation and a shawl. The awards were instituted in 1985. One of the awards is given away to a scientist of the State working outside Orissa. Among others, Science and Technology Minister Duryadhan Majhi, Commissioner N.C. Vasudevan, Academy president Basudev Kar and Secretary Sanatan Rana addressed the gathering.
