Call to use less power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Hyderabad: It was all about conserving energy at the eighth anniversary celebrations of Forum for Better Hyderabad that coincided with the World Environment Day on Thursday.

A number of tips were given to the audience on conserving power, using solar energy for heating and reducing air travel.

“If we could cut down the use of electricity, it can be a positive contribution to lessen greenhouse gas emissions, thereby reducing the global warming phenomena,” said member secretary of Andhra Pradesh Pollution Board (APPCB) Rajesh Tiwari.

Green cover

Principal Conservator of Forests K.S. Rao said that the State boasted of maximum tree cover outside the reserve forest which ran into over 12,120 sq.km.

Moreover, forest cover had also improved since 1994 from 5,094 sq km to 6,094 sq.km.

“Most of the timber that we use in construction is now being technically engineered and is known as Medium Density Fibre Boards. The usage of these boards has brought down tree cutting drastically,” Mr. Rao said.

Carbon emissions

HUDA Vice-Chairman K.S. Jawahar Reddy called for reducing carbon emissions. In the present scenario, over 75 per cent of the carbon release was due to emissions from industries.

“With regard to energy conservation, a green building code is being planned for all new and existing buildings in the city. The code will help people conserve energy."

Natural lighting

The buildings will have to facilitate natural light during the day so that electricity is saved.

Work regarding the code is still being carried out and will materialize in a few months,” he said.
