KOCHI: The no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) of the Thrikkakkara grama panchayat against the president and vice-president of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) was defeated after the opposition failed to muster enough support at the voting held on Thursday. The fate of the no-confidence motion was sealed on Wednesday itself, as the parliamentary party meeting of the LDF decided to abstain from voting and issued whip to its members to that effect. With both sides commanding the support of 11 members each, it was clear that the motion would be defeated if the ruling combine stayed away from the voting. In the morning, the no-confidence motion against vice-president K.N. Radhakrishnan was taken up for discussion even as the LDF stayed away. Expectedly, the voting proved futile, as the opposition failed to muster majority. Significantly, a woman member who returned to the Congress from the Nationalist Congress Party abstained from voting. The motion against president Sabitha Kareem could not even be discussed in the afternoon as scheduled for want of quorum.
