Programme aimed at improving the stock of sheep, encourage sheep breeding and rearing Sheep units for each beneficiary with a subsidy of Rs. 36,000 through financial institutions Sangareddy: The Jeeva Kranti programme, which was deferred due to byelections in the district, is set to be launched in the month of July. Jeeva Kranti is aimed at improving the stock of sheep and encouraging sheep breeding and rearing. Under this programme sheep units containing 20 female and one ram would be given to each beneficiary with a subsidy of Rs. 36,000 through financial institutions. Similarly the beneficiary could opt for ram-lamb unit which is specially meant for slaughter. SubsidyGovernment would provide Rs. 28,000 as subsidy to each beneficiary. Under the lamb breeding programme Deccani and Nellore breed rams would be provided at a cost of Rs. 3000 each so that the sheep rearer could improve his herd with a little investment of Rs. 150 as his share. Speaking to The Hindu the Joint Director of Animal husbandry Khaja Moinuddin said that all those farmers who have received Murrah buffaloes under the Pasu Kranti programme last year would receive the second animal this year taking the total animals distributed in the district to 4050. In addition, 4000 more beneficiaries would be given the high yielding Murrahs this year under the second phase. Commenting on the low milk yield of Murrahs in the district, he advised that the animals must be kept under in cooler conditions through summer months. He said that another scheme heifer -calf rearing programme would be launched in July. InsuranceEven though the district has a population of 12 lakh sheep the sheep insurance programme failed to attract the rearer. Explaining the reasons the Joint Director said that the sheep rearers are not happy with the compensation offered by the insurance companies. They have been demanding Rs. 1500 per sheep. He said that the Animal Husbandry department has set a target of insuring 7 lakh sheep during 2008-2009.
