Man held on charge of kidnapping minor daughter

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: A city police team on Thursday arrested a 39-year-old man from Goa on the charge of kidnapping his three-year-old daughter. The police have taken custody of the minor.

The suspect, Manoj Ansalam Rebeiro of Valiathope, is fighting a divorce case against his wife in the family court here. The court had given Manoj’s wife the custody of his daughter subject to the condition that he could see his daughter twice every month.

According to the police, Manoj disappeared with his daughter on September 6, 2007. His wife moved a habeas corpus petition in the High Court for the custody of her child. The police constituted a special team headed by Assistant Commissioner, Narcotic Cell, S. Ramesh Babu.

The police said that Manoj had gone underground with his daughter after raising a sizeable amount of money by selling a part of his property. They found that the he had obtained a passport for his daughter without her mother’s consent.

The police issued lookout notices against Manoj to all airports, seaports and border check-posts. Investigators also monitored the telephones of Manoj’s relatives and friends in Valiathope.

Mr. Ramesh Babu said the police discovered that Manoj was secretly communicating with his family, particularly his mother who is living with his brother in the U.S.

The police discovered Manoj’s whereabouts by tracking his U.S. connection. Manoj was arrested near Panaji and produced before the local court. The police would produce the minor before the High Court on Friday.

Mr. Ramesh Babu said Manoj would be produced before the magistrate court here on the charges of kidnapping and harassing his wife under sections 363 and 498 (a) of the Indian Penal Code.
