Some 44 lakh workers to benefit Beneficiaries can also open bank accounts Bhubaneswar: To check corruption in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), the Orissa Government on Thursday decided to make payment to beneficiaries through banks and post offices, official sources said. MoU signedThe State government signed an MoU with the Postal Department to ensure that at least 44 lakh beneficiaries, who belonged to poor families, received their payments through post offices and not by middlemen, who allegedly cheat illiterate villagers. “As per the MoU, the Panchayati Raj Department will deposit the amount payable to the wage earners under the NREGS at the head post offices and the amount shall be credited to the savings bank accounts of the beneficiaries by post offices,” A.K. Das, Chief Postmaster-General, Orissa circle, said. He said wages would be disbursed to the beneficiaries as per the provision of withdrawal of savings bank accounts at 7,583 posts offices located in the state. Withdrawal“The wage earner can withdraw money from his account once in seven days,” Mr. Das said. Panchayati Raj Department Secretary R.N. Das, who signed the MoU on behalf of the government, said that the beneficiaries would be asked to open accounts in different post offices from June 15.
