VARIKAPUDISELA (GUNTUR DT.): All tribals engaged in farming activity in forest lands close to their habitation will be given 10 acres each within two months, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy announced here on Thursday. Laying the foundation stone for a lift-irrigation project, the Chief Minister promised to help the farmers in all ways in the dryland areas of Palnadu region in the district where they were unable to irrigate their lands though the Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir only a stone’s throw away from their lands.

Located at a picturesque area at Gangulakunta Thanda in Veldurthy mandal of Guntur district, the project will irrigate 47,000 acres. The first phase of the Rs.350-crore project will irrigate 5,000 acres. It will be completed in 18 months and put an end to migration of families during summer.

The introduction of NREGS had stopped migration to a large extent as jobs were being made available to all the needy within 15 days of their registration under the scheme, Dr. Reddy said addressing people at the project site.

Making a promise to help develop the backward tribal thanda, Ganulakunta, he sanctioned Rs.25 lakh for the development of roads in the village.

AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily praised Dr. Reddy as a model Chief Minister as the latter implemented several pro-farmer schemes like waiver of power dues and crop loans.
