THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Normal supply of drinking water in the 900 mm main line ferrying water from Aruvikkara to the reservoir at Manvila was restored at 8 a.m. on Thursday. The line developed a horizontal crack near Edavacode on Wednesday night. Water supply in this line was chocked by regulating a valve at Muttada. The crack was repaired by welding in place a sheet of mild steel. The areas serviced by the Manvila reservoir include Sreekaryiam, Kariam, Chempazhanthy, Akkulam, Kulathoor, Manvila and Pangappara. The termination of pumping in the 900 mm line, laid as part of the Interim Augmentation Scheme in 2000, proved to be an unexpected bonus to the Peroorkada zone. Once the valve at Muttada was closed, the water being pumping from Aruvikkara got diverted to the reservoir at Peroorkada. This, in turn, led to a surge in the quantity of water in the zone’s distribution network. A much-needed ‘buffer’ of water was also generated at the reservoir. The HDPE line that developed a leak at Chalakuzhy road on Wednesday was also repaired on Thursday. This line was laid as part of the Theerapadhom scheme and ferries water to the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. Leak at AruvikkaraThe leak that was detected in the 1200 mm cast iron pumping main line that supplies water from Aruvikkara to the Peroorkada reservoir may be plugged on Saturday. Officials of the KWA said here that pumping on this line need not be stopped for this minor repair. This ‘minor leak’ was detected on June 2 as workers of the KWA finished repair work on another leak in the same line that day. Pumping on this line was stopped on the night of May 30 after the KWA pinpointed the location of this leak. It took the authority almost a week to remove the huge quantity of earth that was dumped on the site - near the old treatment plant at Aruvikkara - beneath which the line passes.
