RAMANATHAPURAM: The Collector, R. Kirlosh Kumar, on Wednesday conducted a surprise visit at Sri Ramanathasamy Temple in Rameswaram and inspected the functioning of the administration. Temple corridors, bathing gates (theerthams), pilgrims’ amenities, sanitary conditions, dress changing rooms, parking lots, encroachments, ‘agnitheertham’ shore and others were inspected. Issuing on the spot directions to the officials, Mr. Kumar said that the cleaning work on the temple premises was given to a private firm. Additional efforts would be made to maintain the temple neat and clean. A proposal had been sent to the Government for providing drinking water to the pilgrims at a cost of Rs.26.8 lakh for the lodges run by the temple administration. A similar proposal had also been sent to the Government for constructing modern toilets around the temple. Directions were also given to the authorities to create a tourist guide centre and a special transformer to the temple alone. More police forceMr. Kumar said that besides temple staff, at least 10 policemen would be posted for the safety of the pilgrims visiting the temple. Encroachments would be cleared to facilitate easy movement of vehicles.
