MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association felicitated the Director of Aravind Eye Hospitals, G. Natchiar, for her service to the society. The hospital recently won the 2008 Gates Award for Global Health, given in recognition of its “groundbreaking work to prevent debilitating blindness and providing affordable, world-class eye care to the poor.” The Director was honoured during the association’s general body meeting here on May 28. In the past year alone, the hospital provided out-patient care to approximately 24 lakh patients and performed more than 2.80 lakh surgeries. Dr. Natchiar said that Aravind Hospitals was the first hospital in India to bag the Gates award. The hospital also exported lens produced by it to over 150 countries at a low cost, she said, stated a press release from the association.
