Professional plan: The Regional Director NASSCOM, K. Purushoththaman, addressing a meeting in Tirunelveli on Thursday. TIRUNELVELI: With the objective of preparing a huge number of skilled manpower with the highest degree of excellence to get the 10 lakh-odd lucrative jobs to be available in the software industry by 2010, the NASSCOM in association with the Bangalore-based MeritTrack has designed a massive plan, NAC – Tech (National Assessment of Competence and Technology). As per this scheme, the NASSCOM will provide the colleges the curriculum - the much sought-after employability skills being expected out of every candidate by the software industry – and, on their part, the educational institutions will fine-tune the existing skills, academic and other talents, particularly communication skills, of the students. The quantum of learning and understanding by every individual and their performance will be ascertained through either online or offline tests to be conducted at select centres by MeritTrack, chosen by the NASSCOM after a series of rigorous nationwide search. Apart from giving the ‘score card’ to the candidate, the score of every candidate, who took the test, will be automatically forwarded to the NASSCOM member companies, including top ten firms in the software industry such as TCS, HP, HCL, Infosys, Wipro, Birlasoft, Patni Computers, Mindtree etc. If the scores of the students are attractive, the companies will start visiting that region for conducting job fair after deciding the cut-off marks and call letters will be sent directly to the shortlisted students. The companies will not reassess the students on the same parameters evaluated during the online or offline test. When the students register their names for the online test by paying the fee of Rs. 660, sample test papers will be available and it can be used for practice. “We intend to introduce this novel procedure immediately between the institutions and the industry and conduct the maiden examination in July as we’ve planned to conduct the first job fair for the students ascertained through the online or offline examination in August. So the placement officers of all colleges should take extra initiative to equip the rural students with employable soft skills,” appealed Regional Director, NASSCOM, K. Purushothaman, to the placement officers representing various colleges in the discussion held here on Thursday. The Regional Manager (South), MeritTrack, N. Jaishankar, explained salient features of the examination. Coordinator of the programme from this region, A. Ezhilvaanan said the faculty members should rise to the occasion to erase the popular belief of the industry that students from southern districts having sound academic knowledge were not employable owing to lack of communication and other soft skills.
