TIRUCHI: The district administration has deployed field officers to undertake door-to-door survey for determining the genuineness of family cards. This project has been initiated in Tiruchi and Coimbatore districts on a pilot basis. At a training programme conducted for the field officers on Wednesday, Collector T. Soundiah said that the purpose of the exercise was to weed out fake ration cards in the interests of the poor and deserving sections of the society. The State Government was spending Rs. 3,000 crore every year for supplying commodities such as rice, wheat, dal and oil through public distribution outlets at subsidised costs and despite the distribution of ration cards under colour categorisations, unscrupulous elements manipulate the system. Through determining the genuineness of the family cards, the subsidy burden of the government will also come down and the funds could be utilised for other schemes, the Collector said. The field officers would visit households in the evening hours and gather information about the electoral photo identity cards and other details. Under the project, the Government spends Rs. 5 for scrutiny of a family card in corporation limits and Rs. 3 in rural areas. Based on the success of the exercise, the project would be extended to other districts, he said. Civil Supplies Department Deputy Commissioner S. Shanmuganathan, Joint Registrar of Cooperatives A.M. Jeyampandian and District Supply Officer M. Lakshmikanthan also addressed the field officers.
