Guwahati: Tripura observed a bandh on Thursday in response to a 12-hour bandh called by the ruling Left Front while left parties in Assam called for an Assam Bandh on June 9 to protest against the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas price. The Assam government has decided to reduce sales tax on petrol and diesel by one rupee in response to an appeal made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Normal life came to a standstill in Tripura’s capital Agartala as educational institutions, shops and business establishments remained closed during the bandh hours. Programmes deferredThe official programmes relating to observance of the World Environment Day were deferred till Saturday. The State Secretariat and government offices remained closed. “The bandh was total and peaceful. Life came to standstill as there was a spontaneous response to the bandh call,” CPI(M) secretariat member Gautam Das told The Hindu over telephone. Bus services were disrupted and roads wore a deserted look. The bandh also disrupted train and air services.
