All about managing water hyacinth

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A seminar on sustainable management of water hyacinth (popularly known as ‘kulavazha’) in the State will be held here on June 12.

The event is being organised jointly by the Kochi extension centre of the Allahabad Agricultural Institute University and Kerala Higher Education Trust.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, M.V. Pylee, former Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology and one of the organisers of the programme, said that the seminar would initiate discussions and research on water hyacinth in the State.

He said that a viable project funding proposal document on sustainable management of water hyacinth would be submitted to funding agencies and the government.

P.J. George, who had done studies on water hyacinth, said that the water hyacinth was one of the most invasive and gregarious aquatic weeds found in paddy fields, lakes, ponds and marshy places.

He said that sustainable management of water hyacinth was possible through an integrated approach.

He said that the weed can be used in compost making, paper industry, biogas plants, cattle feed and furniture making. For details contact: Phone: 0484-2542465/94460 75986.
