CHENNAI: Children at Don Bosco Beatitudes, a care centre for abandoned children in Vysarpadi, had surprise visitors on Friday.

A team of 35 students from three schools in Singapore visited the centre as part of their tour to learn about Tamil Nadu. The students, studying in classes eight and nine, are on a week-long tour across the State to learn about its culture and lifestyle of the people. The meeting between the students from Singapore and the children at Don Bosco Beatitudes was an interactive and fun-filled event. After a brief cultural programme, students of both the countries learnt about each other and their families.

Director of Don Bosco Beatitudes, Patrick Alphonse said the purpose of the visit of the students to Chennai was to learn about their roots as they shared the same mother tongue — Tamil. They also presented the children of the centre with gifts such as clothes and sports articles. The students plan to visit a few more social service organisations.

About the centre, he said there were around 200 abandoned children being given education and shelter at the facility. The students get free education up to Standard X at the school.

Besides the centre for abandoned children, the campus also has a day care facility for elderly and vocational training centre for women.
