Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: The Centre has deputed an official from the Prime Minister’s Office to verify whether the tsunami-hit schoolchildren were getting education assistance from the Prime Minister’s relief fund.

V. Vidhyavathi, Director in the Prime Minister’s Office, visited a number of schools on Wednesday and interacted with parents and students at Thirumullaivasal in the Sirkazhi taluk, Chandrapadi near Tarangampadi and Keechankuppam, Akkaraipettai and other coastal villages near Nagapattinam.

Official sources said children of standard I to X were getting a monthly grant of Rs.300 from the Prime Minister’s relief fund, and orphaned children were being paid more.
