Protest over withdrawal of polytechnic course

MALAPPURAM: The decision to discontinue one of the technical courses in six polytechnics, particularly at the Government Women’s Polytechnic at Kottakkal, has drawn criticism from the public.

The State government stopped the integrated course of computer application and business management offered by six polytechnics this year. The other polytechnics where the course was cancelled are the ones at Neyyattinkara, Payyannur, Thrikkaripur, Kumali, and Thodupuzha.

Although the course was approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the government stopped it on grounds that the course did not have the recognition of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

“But it is not a course offering job openings only through the PSC,” said Abdurahman Randathani, MLA from Tanur. Mr. Randathani has appealed to Education Minister M.A. Baby to restore the course, especially in the

backdrop of the higher secondary seat shortage in Malappuram district.

The Women’s Polytechnic officials said many of the students who had passed the computer application and business management course had landed jobs with multinational private companies. “Stopping this course, which has 40 seats, is denial of an opportunity for students,” they said. Mr. Randathani said stopping of the course, which was part of the multi-point entry credit system followed at the Kottakkal Women’s Polytechnic, amounted to denial of opportunity for women’s empowerment.

“This is the only women’s polytechnic in this part of the State offering such courses with potential for women’s empowerment.”
