Coimbatore: Raja alias Sivaraj (35) of SKK Nagar in Sulur was hacked to death by a group of three unidentified miscreants in front of the Sulur bus stand in the small hours of Friday. Even as the victim was approaching the bus stand for boarding a bus, the gang that was following him hacked him to death. Police suspect the murder to be a fallout of previous enmity over a dispute on gambling. Sulur police have formed special teams to nab the culprits. Killed in accidentA truck cleaner Mariappan (50) was killed on the spot along with three cows when a lorry laden with cows on its way from Salem to Kerala fell on its side while trying to overtake another truck. The accident took place near Chintamanipudur on the bypass road near Sulur. Nearly a dozen cows sustained injuries. Rice seizedThe flying squad personnel of the district administration led by Tahsildar V. Subramanian intercepted a lorry laden with Public Distribution System (PDS) rice at Sulur in the small hours of Friday. Following a tip-off about smuggling of PDS rice, the flying squad personnel conducted vehicle checks and when a lorry was intercepted near the Sulur police station, the driver abandoned the vehicle and took to heels. On examination, the lorry was found to be laden with 10 tonnes of PDS rice. Efforts are on to trace the consignor and consignee.
