Special squad cracks theft cases Law & order

The recently constituted special crime squad in the city has swung into action solving several cases relating to thefts and burglaries. The squad, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) K.R. Premachandran, could nab many involved in burglaries at shops and temples.

The squad arrested three members of a gang on charges of theft at several shops at Valliyangadi. Those arrested were K. Sainudeen, 31, A.V. Nasirudeen, 31, and Moideen alias Saddam, 47. They were accused of stealing provisions including 500 packets of Horlicks from a wholesale shop, 34 boxes of ghee, 2.5 quintals of arecanut and several sacks of pepper, all valued at over Rs.10 lakh.

Most of these incidents took place in January and February. The five-member gang used to steal goods from wholesale shops and sell the booty to other traders. The police are searching for the other two gang members.

In another case, the squad arrested M.M. Biju, 24, from the Kozhikode railway station on charges of assaulting a watchman and decamping with jewels from the Bhagavati temple at Jaffer Khan Colony in the limits of the Nadakkavu police station in May. His accomplice, Baiju, is at large.

Kozhikode City Police Commissioner Anup Kuruvilla John said that the special crime squads had been activated to prevent burglaries in the city and suburbs during monsoon. Sub Inspectors and Circle Inspectors of each station are also part of the crime squads. Night patrolling had been intensified in residential areas. Residential associati ons have also been asked to keep vigil. As many as 624 cases relating to robbery, theft and house break-ins were registered at the 14 police stations in the city in 2007. Cases relating to house break-in during night hours and thefts in May, June, July, August and September had shown an increase when compared to other months.
