Education officials hauled up for negligence

DAVANGERE: The non-availability of textbooks for classes ranging from the fifth standard to 10th standard in the district was widely discussed at the public grievances meeting held here on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, who chaired the meeting, took officials of the Education Department to task for not ensuring that textbooks were made available to students, despite schools reopening last week. He said he had received several complaints from parents about the non-availability of textbooks and expressed wonder as to how officials could be so lax.

An official said it was not the responsibility of the Education Department to distribute textbooks to private schools and added that 90 per cent of students in government schools had already been supplied the required study material.

‘No moral right’

Seemingly perturbed by the official’s answer, the Deputy Commissioner told him it was the primary responsibility of the department to ensure that study material was made available for students. He asked the official what moral right the Education Department had to visit private schools to evaluate their performance, especially when no facilities were being given to them.

He directed the department to write to the officials concerned to send the required textbooks. He also asked the officials to procure textbooks from neighbouring districts if they were in surplus.

Referring to the photo-identity ration cards, Mr. Dyaberi asked the tahsildars and executive officers to expedite the process of photography and biometric evaluation of beneficiaries. He said many people had submitted applications seeking ration cards and asked officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department to scrutinise them.

He asked Joint Director of Agriculture Shivamurthappa to keep constant vigil on fertilizer dealers, as they had been accused of selling them in the black market.

He also asked the official to ensure that farmers were not taken for a ride by dealers.

He appealed to farmers to inform the district administration if any dealer was found storing fertilizers illegally or selling them in the black market.

Assistant Commissioner Janaki and headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Prabhu Dev were present at the meeting.
