Tribal boy’s body recovered

PUDUCHERRY: The police on Friday recovered the highly-decomposed body of a tribal boy, Ayappan (7), who went missing on May 31, in a paddy field at Perumalpuram near Villianur.

Superintendent of Police (South) A. Kandhanathan said that the boy was strangled to death and the body abandoned in the field. It was handed over to his parents after post-mortem.

The body was recovered following disclosure made by his brother-in-law, Kalian, that he had murdered the boy out of fear that he would disclose certain “secrets” connected with his relationship with some family members, he said.

Mr. Kandhanathan said that immediately after the boy went missing, Kalian informed the boy’s father that he had received an anonymous call on his mobile threatening to kill the boy if they failed to pay Rs. 1.5 lakh.

The boy’s father filed a complaint with the Villianur police alleging that Ayappan had been kidnapped. As per the complaint, the caller had reportedly told Kalian that the boy was kept in a remote place at Ulundurpet in Villupuram district and the kidnappers would release him only after they received the money.

A police team was rushed to Ulunderpet, Mr. Kandhanathan said, adding that they could not find anything. Several missing links in the statement of Kalian surfaced during the course of investigation.

“Meanwhile, Kalian suddenly went missing and we started to doubt his involvement. We picked him up on Thursday evening and he admitted to the crime,” Mr. Kandhanathan said.
