PUDUCHERRY: The Left parties and trade unions on Friday staged demonstrations in different parts of the Union Territory urging the Centre to roll back the price hike of petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas.

Activists of the Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) organised protests at several places in the town and on the outskirts demanding immediate steps to curb the rise in the prices of essential commodities.

They also urged the Centre to implement monopoly procurement, streamline Public Distribution System and exempt agricultural produces from future trading.

Activists of the party took out torchlight processions from Mudrapalayam, Reddiarpalayam and Karuvadikuppam, which culminated in a protest rally near the Rajiv Gandhi statue. A similar protest was staged in Ariankuppam.

Autorickshaw drivers owing allegiance to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions took part in a procession from Kamaraj Salai to a venue near the Assembly to highlight their demands such as streamlining the functioning of petrol bunks.

Tamil Nadu State Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) T. Murugan said that several petrol bunks sold only “power petrol,” a litre of which costs Rs. 3 more than ordinary petrol. He called for steps to curb such activities.
