CPI demands rollback of fuel prices

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India organised a demonstration at ITO here on Friday demanding a rollback of the increase in the prices of fuel and cooking gas announced by the Congress-led Government at the Centre.

Apart from CPI national secretary D. Raja, state and national secretary Amarjeet Kaur and CPI National Council member Dinesh Varshney addressed the party workers. The speakers deplored the Centre’s decision to raise the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas instead of adopting alternatives available to it. They said companies like Reliance and Essar that buy indigenously produced crude and sell them at huge profits in the international markets should be told to divert the crude to cater to the domestic markets. There was no check on their profit margins and no attempt had been made to increase the government earnings, they pointed out.

They said the Government had not taken any steps to check hoarding and had not banned forward trading in at least 25 essential items.

‘Ban forward trading’

The Government must roll back the fuel price hike completely and also ban forward trading on 25 essential items as well as revamp the public distribution system, they demanded.
