Separate cell planned for Bangalore infrastructure

Bangalore Bureau

CVS system of property tax to be reviewed

Urban development policy to be formulated

Priority to be given to development of roads

BANGALORE: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Friday said the Bharatiya Janata Party Government would set up a separate cell to focus on infrastructure development in Bangalore.

In his address to the joint session of the legislature, he noted that the growth of Bangalore had resulted in problems such as high traffic density, deficiencies in drinking water supply and sanitation and increasing pollution. The cell would look into all these infrastructure-related problems.

He said that the Government would review issues related to regularisation of unauthorised constructions and the capital value-based system of property tax.

Though the BJP and the Chief Minister have repeatedly promised to turn Bangalore into a model city, the Governor’s speech had only one paragraph about the city.

The Governor said the Government would formulate an urban development policy to provide the necessary focus for the development of cities and towns in the State. He observed that such a step was necessary as 35 per cent of the State’s population lived in urban areas. At the same time, attention would be paid to provision of urban amenities in rural areas.

He said the Government would give priority to road development and would prepare a master plan in this regard.
