‘Declare Kannada a classical language’

Bangalore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Friday demanded that the Union Government accord classical language status to Kannada at the earliest.

Delivering his address to the joint session of the legislature, Mr. Thakur said that Kannada had a history of over 2,000 years. The issue of according classical status to the language had been taken up with the Centre on several occasions, he said.

Construction of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum would begin shortly.

With a view to developing Karnataka as a top-class tourist destination, he said the Government would accelerate implementation of programmes to achieve it.

Separate industrial zones for steel, cement, food processing and IT and BT had been proposed.

To take the fruits of information technology to every village, cyber cafes would be set up in rural areas. They would promote education and enable the villagers to access information on agriculture, the weather, commodity prices and employment.

Earlier, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Speaker Jagadish Shettar and the Legislative Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar welcomed the Governor and escorted him to the Assembly Hall.
