Paswan wants release of juveniles

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Steel Ram Vilas Paswan has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to facilitate release of juveniles languishing in the jails of Jammu and Kashmir on humanitarian grounds.

He has also sought appointment of a high-power committee to look into the issue of “missing persons” in the terrorism-affected State.

Mr. Paswan, who returned from a three-day visit to the State earlier this week, met the Prime Minister and informed him about problems, hardships and demands of the people of the region.

He told Dr. Singh that certain pressing issues need to be addressed immediately so that the locals could be brought into the national mainstream.

Mr. Paswan, who also heads the Lok Janshakti Party, said people of the State complained that a large number had gone missing in the Valley over the years. He was also told about a large number of unaccounted graveyards containing mass graves of unidentified people in Uri, Rajouri and some other places.

He also told the Prime Minister that poor and helpless families of these missing persons had been trying to locate their kith and kin and visiting senior government officials, but to no avail.

He has urged Dr. Singh to form a high-power committee to look into all aspects of this problem and frame a concrete strategy to resolve it.
