Deplorable

The attack on Loksatta Editor Kumar Ketkar’s house by activists of the Shivsangram Sangathan in Thane was an extreme act of vandalism. Mr. Ketkar was right in criticising the Maharashtra government for its plan to install a statue of Shivaji in Mumbai off the Marine Drive in the Arabian Sea. A vast financial deficit, a severe power crisis and the rise in the number of farmers’ suicides are only some of the numerous problems faced by the people of the State.

The government has made no serious attempt to alleviate their misery but has plans of squandering public money for putting up a statue. This is criminal waste of the exchequer. I am sure Chhatrapati Shivaji would have shed tears had he been alive today.

Sandeep Ghiya,

Mumbai

The attack by the Shivsangram Sangathan deserves strong condemnation. The recent unhappy events in Maharashtra, which include attacks on north Indians, show that intolerance has once again raised its ugly head.

K.D. Viswanaathan,

Coimbatore
