This Day That Age
Ten members of the Federal Party of Ceylon that claims to speak for the Tamil people of the Northern and Eastern provinces have been placed under house detention in Colombo, a Government spokesman announced on June 6 in Colombo. The action against them came after a regulation was effected, vesting powers in the Government to detain in custody any person belonging to a proscribed party or organisation. The Federal Party had been in the leadership of the Tamil agitation for equality of status for their language with the official Sinhalese language for the past two years. The party was proscribed by the Government upon the declaration of a state of emergency on May 27, following island-wide communal disturbances involving the Tamil and the Sinhalese people.
