dated June 7, 1958: Elections in France

Gen. De Gaulle will hold new general elections in France as soon as the country has adopted by referendum the constitutional reform plan he is preparing. The existing National Assembly’s mandate only expires in January 1961, but Gen. De Gaulle is convinced that the country has shown its contempt for the existing Parliament and that after such big changes proposed in France and in Algeria, a fresh appeal to the sovereign people is essential.
