Thiruvananthapuram
Festive occasion: Flag being hoisted to mark the beginning of the 11-day ‘Urus’ at the Beemapally Dargah Shereef in the city on Friday. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The annual Urus festival at the Beemapally Dargah Shereef in Thiruvananthapuram began on Friday with the hoisting of the festival flag. Thousands of devotees from across the district and other parts of the State were present. The 11-day Urus is held to commemorate the death anniversary of Saint Sayyidhathunissa Beema Beevi and her son, Ashaikhu Sayidushaheed Maheen Aboobaker, who were laid to rest at the Dargah Shereef. Abdul Khadir Anvari, Imam of the Beemapally Muslim Jamaath, led the prayers in the morning, marking the start of the festival. This was followed by a ceremonial procession. Chief Imam Sulaiman-Saquafi led a second prayer session before Jamaath president M.K.M. Ismail Sahib hoisted the coloured flag on the minarets of the Dargah Shereef to mark the start of ceremonies during the festival. Religious discourses by Muslim scholars, cultural performances and prayer meetings will be held during the event. Religious, political and cultural leaders are expected to participate in a conference on religious harmony on June 13. The curtains will come down on the festival with a mass prayer for the welfare of mankind and a feast on June 16.
