‘Governor should clarify on change in stand’

BJP does not have ruling majority: Chandre Gowda

CHIKMAGALUR: D.B. Chandre Gowda, former Minister, has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to clarify the reasons behind his change in stand on not addressing the joint session of the Legislature before the new Government proved its majority on the floor of the House.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Gowda reiterated that the Bharatiya Janata Party did not have a ruling majority and was depending on the support of independents, thereby making it a coalition government.

Bad precedent

Pointing out that the Governor’s speech was prepared by the Government, Mr. Gowda said that by accepting to speak first he had set a bad precedent.

The Governor could have decided to speak if the Government had a clear majority, he added.

Confident

Commending the Government for choosing Jagadish Shettar as Speaker, he expressed confidence that the Government would follow the long-standing practice of leaving the Deputy Speaker’s post to the Opposition, as this would help strengthen the parliamentary system.

He regretted that there was no representation from Chikmagalur district in the State Cabinet. Mr. Gowda said that mistakes committed in selection of candidates had resulted in the loss of several seats to the Congress.
