They have created a comprehensive database of profiles over last one year, writes R. Rajaram
Handy: A constable using the Face and Fingerprint - Registration Search and Management System. An exclusive Fingerprint Bureau has been sanctioned for Tiruchi City Police by the State Government to aid and assist law enforcers in crime investigations. Hitherto, the city police had to rely on the Fingerprint experts attached to the Tiruchi Rural Police. An officer in the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Police will head the team of Fingerprint Bureau with three officers in the rank of Inspectors, two officers in the rank of Sub-Inspectors and support staff, police authorities here said. Fingerprint experts play a very crucial role in aiding the police in cracking cases– be it property crime, murder or murder for gain cases, say investigating officers. Particularly for property crime offences, the services of Fingerprint experts are vital to detect “foreign” prints. The “foreign” prints lifted from the scene of crime are carefully isolated and immediately sent for matching by the Fingerprint experts with the existing database of prints available with the local police or with the State or National Fingerprint Bureaus in an effort to zero-in on the actual accused involved in the offence. City Police authorities say fingerprints of many criminals, ex-convicts and suspects have been stored in the computerised database under the Face and Fingerprint – Registration Search and Management System - for ready access whenever required. The comprehensive database created by the city police over the last one year contains detailed profiles of over 30,000 criminals of Tiruchi City and those from other places in the district. The profiles are being constantly updated. Many profiles of the offenders contain their images. A matching fingerprint is all that is required to gain quick access to the entire history of the offenders from the database, say the police.
