Man held on murder charge

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: A naxal sympathiser was arrested from MV-79 village in Malkangiri district for his alleged involvement in the murder of local lawyer and BJD district secretary Prabir Mohanty.

The police said that 37-year-old Raghunath Majhi was the mastermind behind the murder of Mohanty. The body of the BJD leader was recovered near MPV-127 village on May 27. He was shot dead allegedly by a group of Maoists who had taken him with them on May 26 night. According to the police, Prabir’s relationship with naxals turned sour in the recent times.

Malkangiri SP Satish Kumar Gajbhiye said: “Tussle over money mobilised through extortion and religious affairs are suspected to be the reasons behind the murder.”

Raghunath had strong links with the naxals and police records mention about his involvement in extortion and Maoist activities. He was an active member of some frontal organisations of naxals. His brother Braja Majhi, a CPI activist of Malkangiri district, claimed that his brother was innocent and had no links with the naxals.
