Society members get milch animals

DINDIGUL: To increase milk production and boost rural economy, 100 members, including women, of Pallapatti Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society bought milch animals and calves to supply milk to the Aavin, thanks to joint efforts taken by the Aavin and the State Bank of India. Initially, each beneficiary received a financial assistance of Rs.15,000 to buy a cow. After six months, the same amount is given again to buy one more milch animal.

Handing over the cows to members at Pallapatti on Friday, Collector R. Vasuki said that this effort would not only augment milk production but also boost the revenue of the society with 2,844 members. They could start supplying milk immediately.

The Aavin was ready to procure the entire quantity of milk supplied by the society. Participation of society members was essential for development of the society and the Aavin.

The Government had recently introduced a special welfare scheme for milk society members. Cattle farmers should supply milk regularly to the societies to avail the scheme. Educational and marriage assistance would also be offered to their wards, MS. Vasuki said.

In his address, Aavin General Manager G. Nagarajan said that each farmer could save Rs.200 a day. Each cow could give 15 litres of milk.

Deputy Registrar of Cooperatives S. Raja Masthan said that each society member has to contribute Re.1 to the welfare board.

The society and the Aavin will also contribute 50 paise each to the board for every member. In case of death or permanent deformity, a relief of Rs.1 lakh would be given. For loss of limb, Rs.50,000 would be given.

SBI Deputy General Manager G. Nagarajan said that Nilakottai branch had disbursed Rs.15 lakh under the scheme in the first phase.

Later, the Collector distributed Rs.8 lakh to members of self-help groups to improve their economic activities. Officials said that the society was one of the major milk procurement centres in the district.
