BJP government wins vote with ease

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The eight-day-old Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State headed by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa won the vote of confidence in the Legislative Assembly here on Friday with ease.

It is possibly the first time in the history of the State Legislature that a confidence vote has been obtained within three hours of it being tabled for consideration. Rather than putting up a fight, the Opposition caved in. The ruling party, including the six independents, has a strength of 116 while the combined Opposition has a strength of 108 in the 224-member Assembly.

The Congress expressed its displeasure over the Chief Minister’s reply to the confidence motion and staged a walkout. The only other Opposition party, the Janata Dal (Secular), sat through even as Speaker Jagadish Shettar sought a voice vote of all the members.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the BJP Government in the State would last its full term in office and promised the people that his government would do all that it could for their well being.

“I am happy with the victory and thank all those who have extended support,” he said .

With reference to inflation and the increase in the price of petrol, diesel and LPG, the Chief Minister announced that Karnataka would provide relief to the people, just as other States had done. “The Cabinet will soon meet and take a decision. The fact, however, is that the Karnataka Government is not responsible for the price rise and it is the Union Government which has dealt this blow to the people,” he said.
