Cash, jewellery stolen from businessman’s house

Police suspect newly hired domestic help and friend

NEW DELHI: A newly hired domestic help decamped with cash, jewellery and other valuables at Kohat Enclave here on Thursday while the family had gone out to shop.

The theft came to light late in the evening when businessman Anil Kumar returned home along with his wife, son and daughter and found the front door ajar. When the family stepped inside, they found the entire two-floor house ransacked and their other domestic help Munna, who has been working with the family for the past four years, locked up in a room. Beer bottles were strewn around in the bedroom and all cupboards were open.

Mr. Kumar had gone to South Extension around 5 p.m. along with his family to shop for the marriage of his daughter.

The family had left behind the house keys with Munna, a resident of Assam. Ram Bahadur, who is suspected to be behind the theft, was hired a fortnight ago at the instance of a local tailor.

“As part of a drive, the police had requested the family many times to get their domestic help verified, but they dilly-dallied. Even the tailor who had introduced him is not traceable,” said a police officer, adding that the family was yet to ascertain what all was missing from the house.

According to the family, Ram Bahadur had told them that he was a native of Nepal, though he never provided any credentials to support his identity. He worked hard during the initial few days and won the confidence of the family. He then extracted information about cash and jewellery kept in the house.

A case has been registered under Section 381(theft by servant of property in possession of master) of the Indian Penal Code at the Saraswati Vihar police station.

The police said the role of Munna also seemed suspicious and he was being interrogated.
