CBI custody for journalist

NEW DELHI: A special CBI court on Friday remanded journalist Mukul Pathak, arrested in connection with the bribery case involving sacked Assam Education Minister Ripon Bora, to one-day CBI custody.

While remanding the accused, Special CBI Judge V.K. Maheshwari agreed with the investigating agency’s plea that it needed to interrogate Pathak to ascertain the exact magnitude and nature of conspiracy in which the Minister, accused in a murder case, allegedly tried to bribe the investigating officer to wriggle out of the case.

It was alleged by the CBI that Pathak had assured the Minister that he would be able to broker a deal with A.B. Gupta, CBI’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, who was investigating the case.

Mr. Bora and co-accused Ramesh Maheshwari were arrested on June 3.
