Speaking at a two-day conference of workers of Ekal Abhiyan here, she said that women activists and workers played an important role in achieving the noble objectives of the movement. She said that the movement by the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation was aimed at eradicating illiteracy in rural areas and tribal belts of the country with support from women in urban areas by 2011 through Ekal Vidyalayas. There were 26,000 schools, 5,000 workers, 20 field organisations in various States and eight support agencies participated in the movement towards creating a network of non-formal schools to educate and empower children in rural areas. In the State, there were 990 schools.
