BANGALORE: The process to select Kannada films for government subsidy has commenced, and yet again it is rife with controversy. The subsidy committee constituted by the Department of Information has selected 46 cinemas for subsidy. But much against its own norm that remake cinemas do not deserve subsidy, the committee, reportedly under pressure from a top official, known for his penchant for publicity and association with stardom, has compromised in respect of four films. They are E Bandhana, Accident, Sundariya Ganda Sadananda and Bindas. While E Bandhana is said to be a remake of the Hindi blockbuster Baghban, the director of Accident, Ramesh Aravind, was honest enough to admit that he was inspired by a French play and French comic thrillers. Sundariya Ganda Sadananda is said to be a diluted version of Phone Booth. Interestingly, film artiste-politician Jai Jagadeesh, who created a record of sorts by changing his loyalty from the Bahujan Samaj Party to Bharatiya Janata Party within hours, has reportedly claimed that the roots of his film E Bandhana could be traced to the national award winner B.R. Pantulu’s classic School Master and not a remade version of Bagbhan. Despite the debatable eligibility of the films in question, the top official has reportedly recommended them for a subsidy of Rs. 20 lakh each. Though the political clout of others is not known, the producer of E Bandhana is reportedly ensured of subsidy.
